Jackie's Beer Garden

One of the various seafood cze char restaurants in Changi Village which dad was curious to try. It was pretty packed when we got there close to 7pm, which is probably a good sign.

Steamed flower clams

Spinach in 3 eggs

Steamed fish (not sure what is the eng name of it)

Steamed flower crabs

BBQ chicken wings

Generally the food is ok for a cze char place, and seafood is fresh enough, which was why the majority of dishes are steamed. The tender pork ribs is already deboned, so it makes it much easier to eat. The clams goes much better with chilli or sambal. Spinach is not exactly up to standard, as it tends to be a little dry and tasteless without the sauce. Not exactly cheap though, paid around $111 for all of the above dishes.

Imperial Treasure Cantonese Restuarant

This is probably one of the newest branch of the Imperial Treasure group, and specialises in Cantonese cuisine, and of course, dim sum.

Char siew cheong fun

Scallop and spinach dumpling

Shrimp dumpling aka har gow

xiao long bao

you tiao cheong fun aka zhar leong

Phoenix claws aka chicken feet

Spare ribs in black bean sauce

siew mai

scallop cheong fun

baked egg tart

Deep fried Red bean ball with banana

Century egg and pork congee

Steamed custard bun

Deep fried Beancurd skin roll

Durian pudding

Overall, the standard of the dim sum here is pretty satisfactory....comparable to some restaurants in HK (of course not the high class ones lah!)...some items like the har gow (prawn not big & succulent enough), siew mai (too small, texture not as good), xiao long bao (too small, not much soup, skin abit sticky) are a little bit disappointing....and some like the custard bun (interesting salty-sweet taste), beancurd skin roll (not as oily as it looks), spinach and scallop dumpling (for people who do not like chives) and durian pudding (solid durian!) is worth 2nd orders. Service can definitely need more improvement though.

Prices are the average Chinese restaurant prices, ranging from $3+ to $10+ an item, UOB and Amex card members have 10% discount off total food bill. Best to call for reservations, as they have 3 specific seatings for lunch.

Applebee's

I believe most of you who will pass by the old Singapore Power Building at Somerset might have noticed this brightly-lit restaurant standing at its place. This is a pretty famous chain in the US, which has decided to open its 1st Singapore outlet there. Unmistakable for its red and green neon lights, there have been mixed reviews for this one-of-many "new kids on the block", so i decided to try it for myself.

Applebee's Honey BBQ half rack ribs

Steak & grilled prawns combo (1st half)

Steak & grilled prawns combo (2nd half)

Tried abit of the ribs and the fries, its not too bad, the ribs are relatively soft enough to remove it from the bone and the fries have a slight cajun taste to it. However, the fries tend to harden up overtime probably due to the aircon. The steak and combo is pretty sufficient for a male eater, with 10 pcs of grilled prawns, 1 ribeye steak (210 grm), some sauteed seasonal vegetables and a mini-mountain of garlic mashed potatoes. The prawns are pretty succulent, however a little salty. Upon serving, the waitress will politely ask you to slice the steak to check if it is done to your requested well-ness, and if it is not, she will send it back to the kitchen to be redone. A plus point for a casual diner! But i feel they can learn to grasp the doneness of steak a little better, mine was first a little more raw, but after i sent it back, it came a little too well-done. Other than that, no complains. The vegetables were too salty. The garlic mash was something different, and they used red potatoes which is commonly used in salads, so its sweeter and slightly less starchy. Overall, satisfactory, just a little too oily and salty.
Prices can be a little too steep for most items, but the Half rack ribs @ $21.90 and the Steak & prawns combo @ $24.90 is one of the relatively acceptably-priced ones.
