Fremantle Seafood Market & Sun with Moon

Another short, but not-so-sweet post.

retro decor

raw oysters ($18/half dozen)

Baked Tarahiki fish with 2 sides of the day (potato gratin + seasonal veg) - $24

Grilled steak????

No, its Salmon steak! ($24)

dessert en-route home

Goma pudding ($5.50)

Amau strawberry cheesecake ($7.50)

Honestly, i was disappointed after my meal at Fremantle. After all the hype about it, its pretty over-rated, and over-priced for the small portions they give. Granted, they have a selection of various fishes we never heard before in SG, and if u really really love fish, and have tried ALL the fishes in SG and is still not satisfied, you can give Fremantle a shot. But if you are a big eater, be prepared to spend alot, because portions here are lady-sized, but prices are big! I am in 2 minds on trying their cheaper takeaways another time.

Not FULLy satisfied (pun not intended) with the meal, Sun with Moon was the next stop for dessert. Among their rather scarce choices of desserts they have on offer, we picked the Goma pudding (only because it is 1 of the remaining few desserts i haven't tried before) and the Amau strawberry cheesecake (limited time on offer, part of a special promo). To simply describe the Goma pudding, imagine slathering Black Sesame paste on top of a Japanese milk pudding. Thats more or less it. Pretty neutral about it, need some getting used to for my tastebuds. The strawberry cheesecake tastes like, well, strawberry cheesecake. But a lighter and mousse-like version, with very light strawberry tastes. Portion is not worth the price though. But oh well, its for a limited time only anyway.

Food Tour #2: Feast@East

salad section

seafood section

oysters!

ala-minute section

part of the dessert section

old-school ice-kacang machine

 assorted raw seafood

Of all the choices on offer, only the salmon, oysters and prawns are worth piling on...

cream of mushrom soup

Tastes suspiciously like Cambell soup....the Black Chicken with Ginseng soup (picture not taken) is much better...

Lamb chops with sauteed potatoes, ayam buah keluak, chilli crayfish

My lamb is not properly cooked, and still rare....but my friend's one is ok....it just shows that the cooks are not consistent....the ayam buah keluak doesnt tastes like how i imagined it to be....and the buah keluak is hard! But the chilli crayfish is acceptable...

Stir-fried beef, seafood beancurd, beef rendang, stingray (clockwise from bottom left)

Nothing special about all 4 dishes, probably the stingray is the best among the 4...

beef steak

Ordered it done medium...it came out a tinge towards medium well....texture of the meat is pretty rough, but still acceptable....didnt really have expectations of this....

pulut hitam

Not too bad, should have paired it with ice cream instead of coconut milk, which is an oversight on my part...

Durian pengat, nonya kueh, cherry cake, corn cake

The cakes are not worth trying, but the durian pengat and nonya kueh is not bad...if i had more room in my stomach, i would also try the durian cake and the ice kachang...

old-school titbits

Out of the misleading amounts of jars containing old-school titbits neatly placed on 2 shelves, we can only take the 4 or 5 jars that have been placed on the buffet counters...and the rest are just for display only....this buffet is a little over-priced, even with the UOB promo of 1 dines free with every 3 diners, and each of us end up paying about $30....without the promo, it is $32+ for lunch, and $38+ for dinner....unless u can stuff your stomach silly with raw seafood, beef, lamb and desserts, no point trying....

The Handburger & Honeymoon Dessert

Don't really feel like writing too much for this, so i'll let the pictures do most of the talking.

The handburger original ($7.80)

Chunky fries

Duck confit burger ($11.80)

Onion Rings

The handburger is slightly different from other hamburgers, as they use a slab of ribeye steak instead of grounded beef. Done medium-well by default (or unless instructed otherwise), it is definitely more flavourful and solid than the usual hamburgers. The duck confit burger is the most special item on the menu, and it is pretty nice and not oily at all. The fries and onion rings are add-ons to the burgers for an addtional $4 each, including a drink.

yes, the local branch of the HK dessert shop

Glutinous rice balls and sweet potato in ginger soup ($2)

Durian pancake ($4.80)

Honestly speaking, its too over-rated...especially the pancakes...i think it is cheaper and more worth it to eat in HK. But once again, if you have a dessert craving and do not wish to fly all the way there, its still acceptable to have it here, just do not eat the pancake.

Porn's

This new kid on the block is opened by Mediacorp artiste, Pornsak, who was born in Thailand, so what fits him the most, than Thai food?

part of the menu

a special glass with indentations on both sides so that the glass won't slip out of people's hands

Tom Yum soup with chicken

Thai Green Curry with chicken

Thai Pineapple rice

Thai Glutinous rice with Mango

Generally, the standard of the dishes there are not too bad. The tom yum soup is really hot and sour, without being too overbearing. The green curry is a little milky, but the chicken in both the curry and the soup is very tender. The pineapple rice pales slightly in comparison though, so i feel that plain rice would probably be more suitable (and cheaper) to go with the dishes. The mango with glutinous rice is not too bad too, the mango is not overly sweet or sour, and the glutinous rice balls are warm, and encassed in sufficient amounts of coconut milk.

Probably because of Pornsak's popularity, the restaurant is pretty packed during dinner time, and their reservations are always full. So if you intend to give this a try, i would suggest you reach there earlier than the standard meal times (12pm for lunch, 7pm for dinner) so that you won't have to wait too long for a table.

Izakaya Nijumaru + Charly T's

This was recommended by a friend who tried their grilled skewers and sashimi (among other things), and kept raving about it, so i was dragged down here to try their food. Izakaya culture, in Japanese cuisine, is where people gather together, over small plates of grilled and fried items, coupled with a few bottles of quality sake, and catch up on lost times.

typical Jap decor

As the prices were not cheap, and we were both famished, we decided to try their sets first, to fill our tummies up.

Sashimi set ($14)

Salmon, tuna and squid sashimi

Beef teriyaki set ($15)

beef teriyaki with garlic mustard sauce

Honestly. their set meals were nothing much to rave about, and i can definitely get better ones elsewhere for that price. The sashimi were of mixed standard, the salmon was ok, properly thawed, but not sweet; the tuna was NOT properly thawed, and probably one of the toughest cut of raw tuna i have ever eaten, and not sweet; the squid was the worst, hard and chewy, i can only muster 1 piece, and gave up on the rest. The beef teriyaki was ok, but too over-cooked for my liking. All-in-all, i will not try their set meals again.

Grilled beef skewer ($12)

However, we refused to give up just like that, and decided to give them 1 last chance by trying 1 of the skewered items which my friend was drooling about that brought us here, the grilled beef skewer (beef kushiyaki i think). After all, a izakaya restaurant should be famous for their grilled items and sake right?
At last, something that didnt fail us! The beef was nicely cooked, probably medium-rare with some amounts of blood and fat oozing out from the middle, once you sink your teeth into it. Worth a try for beef lovers, albeit a little pricey.

Although they are supposedly famous for their roasted chicken, we can't stuff a bird (or even a quarter of it) into our stomachs anymore, so we decided to try their desserts instead, as their next-door neighbour, I-Caramel is packed with a waiting list.

Vanilla Bourbon & Earl Grey (can you tell which is which?)

Charly T's Waffles with Honey, Fig & Dates ($5.50)

As i can't take chocolate yet, we went for something healthy, which came in the form of waffles with fig & dates. The waffles were supposedly freshly baked, but it was a little hard when it arrived, and got harder as the time passes, if not for the saviour of sticky honey to soften it. Fig & dates in waffles is not a common sight, but unless you are really trying to be health-conscious and must have some form of fruit in your dessert, i think a chocolate and banana waffle with ice cream is still the best. :)
